My Favorite Surprise Today

Posted on 2009.01.20 at 22:09
This moment moved me to tears. It stunned and awed me that we paused in the middle of something as gigantic as a change of government to hear four of the world's greatest musical talents -- five if you count composer John Williams -- making this somber, ethereal, challenging music...

And how lovely was it seeing these four -- especially Yo Yo Ma -- smiling at one another, digging on one another -- jamming, even while holding note-to-note to the composed score of rehearsed music.

Glorious!

itzhak perlman is my absolute favouritest ever.(and lord of the dance is an alltime favourite song of mine, also. even though i don't "do" favourites). and yoyo ma is not far behind. so this is thrilling. thankyou for the link, L.

really love it.

but what a strange choice for a public event, that long drawn out intro is not exactly something to keep the lay people interested. no wonder the children were playing. at first i thought it might be the aaron copland version, which would make more sense. so it's john williams is it?

My comment when I saw that:

Yo Yo Ma looks like he learned this piece when he was a kid. I half expect him to start updating facebook on the side while he plays. "Hey, check it out! I like this part."

I was enthralled by the piece when I heard it the first time, then did a youtube search to find it afterward. What a great combination of elements that define America: Shaker tunes, Copeland arrangements, John Williams Arrangements, a Chinese American, an American with Israeli roots, an Italian American, and an African American (I'm making assumptions about the nationality/ethnicity of a few of them, so forgive me if I got them wrong). I thought it was gorgeous!

It was fabulous! Yo-Yo Ma has fun playing whereever, whenever and whatever.

But who was that clarinetest? He was very, very good.
