Leviathan meets the Incredible Hulk

Thanks, Republicans

So, to deal with the economic catastrophe caused by years and years of Republican control of the United States government, thier idiotic deregulatory fervor, their corporate welfare and ongoing transfer of wealth from those least able to afford it to the wealthiest Americans, the federal government was offering a 20-week extension for unemployment benefits, after 24 weeks of state benefits ran out. In Massachusetts, in order to qualify for those benefits, I actually had to sacrifice six weeks of state benefits, as Massachusetts benefits run for 30 weeks.

But, voting in lockstep, the Republican Senators blocked the funding of these extended benefits as of last week. So last Tuesday, I received my last Unemployment payment, unless and until the Democratic majority manages to outvote the Republican minority, and re-instate the benefit. On Tuesday -- Monday's a Holiday -- I will be calling the Massachusetts Department of Workforce Development, Division of Unemployment Insurance, to see if the State will re-extend the benefits I had to give up in order to get that Federal "Extension," which has, thanks to the perfidy of the Republican party, unwilling to even mitigate the disaster it caused, shortened my benefits.

So, thank you, you asshole Republican shitbags. I don't know if I'll be able to continue to afford electricity. My wife's talking about selling my car. Thanks.

I'm so sorry. Farking politics!

I'm shocked. To shorten your benefits on a false promise and then leave you high and dry, that is so awful, I can't even... wow. That's just really embittering.

I can't imagine how bad you must feel. I do admire that you're thinking of talking to the Workforce Dept. -it's hard to think of positive action in a shitty situation like this. But what a lousy, lousy thing to do.

Oh, darling. {{hug}}

I'm sorry, mate :-(

I hope things get better for you soon.

Is there no hope of some employment turning up to save you?
OMG it's full of STARS!

*hugs you*

I'm so very sorry. And see I know someone around this area that has managed to catch extension after extension and has had over 18 months at this point and is whining that it isn't enough. Mind you she's making more on unemployment than she'd make on min. wage but it is SO unfair that you end up with only 24 weeks and I KNOW your area is much worse for unemployment.
Chin up and hugs across the modem lines.

A mutual friend informs me that you are working on a longish fic and that computer/money woes are causing stress.

Of course, the computer woes would be difficult for you in any case.

But if there's anything one could do to help? please let me know!

Well, at this point, I just have to wait for the Massachusetts Department of Unemployment Assistance to finish getting tooled up, and I'll be getting checks again, the first one, a big check retroactively covering weeks when they weren't being sent out.

On the other hand, I'm thinking that what I thought was a hardware problem with my computer may have been a malware problem, largely solved by a Windows Update I was able to install yesterday. This is, if I'm right, a huge victory, and it means I'll be able to start on what I hope is the "Home Stretch" of "Our Right Trusty and Right Well-Beloved Cousins," a long and serious tale in which Kelly and Scotty -- and two twentysomething American tourists named Jed Bartlet and Leo McGarry -- fight to save Abd Al-Salaam, King Bashik of Khadra, from being blackmailed by "The Fist," the secret police of neighboring Qumar...

Dude! The fic sounds amazing ... I'm the only left-leaning American of my generation who didn't mainline TWW, but I'm familiar enough with the characters to appreciate the wonderfulness of the idea!

Best of luck w/the malware issues, and do let me know if I can make "Right Trusty" happen any sooner!
