Captain America

The Deregulators Were Right. That's The Problem.

The deregulators were right. The free market will take care of itself.

That, of course, is a real problem.

The problem is this: It's evolution. Evolution is fact, and more than fact, it's life as you see it going on all around you. Every time you say, "He looks just like his mom and dad," that's evolution.

Evolution is that the strongest live and the rest die. Somebody ends up on top of the food chain, which is lovely for them. Who it's not so lovely for is thepile of mangled, bloody, devoured corpses that makes up the rest of the food chain.

The result of the Free Market taking care of itself is a vast sea of poverty and misery, starvation and homelessness, with a tiny number of super-rich islands.

Humans are better than that. Americans are better than that. We do believe we have a responsibility for the well-being of our fellow-men, and in this case, we achieve it through regulation of the markets. No industry has ever been deregulated without catastrophic results for the consumers. We don't want the free market to take care of itself, because life in a state of nature is solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short. Nature, red in tooth and claw.

The fun part, of course, is how many of the same people who don't want Darwin taught in our schools want him put in charge of our economy.
