Be heartbroken, be humbled.

I first discovered this story about six years ago, and it has haunted me.

It first appeeared on the fifth of June, 1997, in a free, weekly newspaper called the Miami New Times. The glimpse it gives you into the lives of the homeless children of Miami will break your heart. And if you write at all, the power of their storytelling will humble you.

If only because it makes as much sense as anything else.

God, yes. BTW, I saw on the web somewhere while looking again for the link last night that Clive Barker has optioned this story. If true, it's easy to see why. I hope he does it, and the children who tell it, justice.

It's children's search for meaning in a mean and meaningless word.

The resiliency of children is astounding and really brings home the effort or carelessness that some go to to kill it.

It's just such an amazing, heartbreaking, stunning story. I am in awe.
