I have real issues with the documentary, "Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man." Certainly the interview material with Cohen was magnificent, and the material by various musicians -- especially Bono and the Edge and Nick Cave -- talking about Cohen was fabulous. But the direction was horrible. The director refused to have faith in his material, dressing up the interview segments with distracting, kitschy visual effects, dropping spoken word segments into the instrumental bridges of songs during musical performances, and way, way, way too much Rufus Wainright. (Yes, he loves Cohen and these songs... But he really doesn't "get" some of them, especially "Hallelujah.") And, yes, I know that you'll find Leonard Cohen under "Folk" in the record store, but did so many of the songs have to be arranged as if they were being used in the soundtrack of "Brother, Where Art Thou?"
