Three Minutes of Great Jazz

I found this via News From ME the invaluable blog of Mark Evanier.

Jazz guys, I've read, hated to see Raymond Scott's music referred to as "Jazz," because Scott didn't allow improvisation. You played his music as he wrote it, and damned well liked it. If you didn't like the music, however, I have a hard time respecting your views on Jazz.

Raymond Scott and the Raymond Scott Quintet (That's six guys all together) playing Powerhouse. That's Mr. Scott on the piano.

I liked it, but I think it reminded me more of what you'd get if someone from the 'Big Band' era decided they needed to show what they could do in a Jazz composition as well as what they were more well know for. Maybe some other piece's by them would sound what I think of as more traditional Jazz? I admit a preference towards a mellow Jazz sound so that has a lot to do with it. I and the hubby like to go and listen to a Jazz trio that plays at our favorite Italian restaurant on Thursdays (yes I know the combo of Jazz & Italian is an odd juxtaposition) when we can so I think I get exposed fairly often to the genre. Heck that trio played our wedding reception years ago and certainly one of the constant compliments I got about the reception was the music.
Still for what it's worth thanks for posting!
